RIPDB: Resting In Pop Culture
I even doodled the little SVG above so there’d be at least one piece of “production-ready” art in this launch.
Every October my movie queue turns into nothing but black-and-white classics. Without fail, halfway through a film I’ll pause and go “wait… are they still alive?” and then spend 20 minutes on Wikipedia instead of finishing the movie. This happens enough that I finally just built the thing: RIPDB. Type in a movie, see the cast, find out who’s still with us and who isn’t.
How it works
It’s simple on purpose. Search a movie, get the cast list, see who’s alive and who’s passed. I kept the tone respectful — no shock value, just context. The interface leans a little gothy because it launched on Halloween and I thought that was funny.
This is not a polished product. I kept waiting for someone else to have already built this, and I kept not building it because I figured I’d do it “the right way” eventually. Turns out the right way was a pot of tea and a bunch of late-night commits where I kept asking myself if this was weird. It’s a little weird. I shipped it anyway.
Try it
- Search your favorite classic and see the cast status at a glance
- Tap through to learn more without losing your spot in the film
- Let me know if something’s off — I probably missed an edge case while double-checking if Boris Karloff was actually in every movie ever made
What’s next
If people find it useful (or at least charmingly odd), I’d love to add year filters, auto-updating obituaries, and maybe a “surprise me” button for marathon nights. For now it’s done-ish and I’m calling that a win.
